W.H. Hudson, author and naturalist, was born in Argentina of American parents. While growing up in Argentina, he developed a passion for the wildlife of the Pampas, particularly its birds. He eventually became disillusioned by the effect on the Pampas's ecosystem caused by large-scale immigration of bird-eating Italians.
